How GPA is calculated in Canada
Most Canadian colleges and universities use a credit-weighted average. Each letter grade is turned into grade points, multiplied by the course's credits, and the total is divided by the credits you took.
GPA = (grade points × credits, added up) ÷ total credits
Example on the 4.0 scale: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 6-credit course give (4.0 × 3 + 3.0 × 6) ÷ 9 = 3.33.
Your term GPA covers one semester. Your cumulative GPA (CGPA) covers every course you've taken at your school. To update it, add your past GPA and credits in the section above.
Grade points on each scale
| Letter | 4.0 scale | 4.3 scale |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 | 4.3 |
| A | 4.0 | 4.0 |
| A- | 3.7 | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 | 3.0 |
| B- | 2.7 | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 | 2.0 |
| C- | 1.7 | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 | 1.0 |
| D- | 0.7 | 0.7 |
| F | 0.0 | 0.0 |
Some schools, such as MacEwan and the University of Alberta, don't use D−. Pick your school above to use its exact grade points. On York University's 9-point scale, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C+ = 5, C = 4, D+ = 3, D = 2, E = 1 and F = 0.
Good to know
Is this my official GPA?
No. It's an estimate for planning. Schools can treat repeated courses, transfer credits and pass/fail courses differently, so check your school's official grading policy or transcript.
My school uses percentages. What do I do?
Turn each percentage into the letter grade from your course outline or your school's grading policy, then choose that letter above. Percentage cut-offs differ from school to school.
Is anything I type saved?
No. The calculator runs in your browser and doesn't store your grades. If you want them saved and kept up to date, try the Student Hub.
